Featured Artists #4: Adrian Riley / Serena Killen

MEANS once again shares the work of two exciting grassroots artists. This post marks the fourth of our new online series, where we showcase two artists whose work we particularly admire. Check them out below!

Adrian Riley

Adrian Riley is an artist-designer working with words in the world. Although usually working to public art commissions, their current project is self-initiated and seeks to observe and give name to ‘microseasons’ in the coastal town of scarborough. Inspired by a Japanese tradition, these tiny text artworks hint at bigger stories, many relating to the current environmental crisis, but many also aiming to help people find delight in the everyday and taking some comfort in the recurrent themes of the town.

Serena Killen

Serena Killen is a Documentary Photographer. Her Memory in Pixels project explores modern music culture by highlighting grassroots bands and local venues. She captures the vibrancy and ‘determination’ of these spaces as they face challenges like rising costs and limited late-night transportation. By sharing these stories, Killen showcases the resilience of the music community and emphasises the need for support in keeping these venues and communities vibrant. These grassroots music venues are vital for up and coming bands to have a platform to express their creativity and build a fan base. The project hopes to highlight some of the strengths and determination these venues have.
